Roti Bakar Eddy was established in the early 1970s in Blok M, South Jakarta. According to the eatery’s website, Eddy who originated from Surakarta, Central Java, first came to Jakarta when he was 15 in 1966, in an attempt to make a better living, and landed a job in a humble street toast eatery.

He managed to set up his own street food cart after quite some time, trying his luck with different kind of foods to no success. But when he established Roti Bakar Eddy in 1971, the eatery gained fame and he became successful.

Among the keys to his success was the homemade bread that is claimed to be made without preservatives. Years later, the humble street eatery in Blok M branched out to a number of restaurants in different areas including Bogor, Depok, Cibubur and Bintaro.

The restaurants, now serving many kinds of comfort food aside from toast, are managed by Eddy’s children. (mut)
