A lucky star must have shone on Dedi Heriyadi.

During National Online Shopping Day (Harbolnas), the online ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver decided to try his luck in a lucky draw of sorts offered by e-commerce platform Bukalapak called SerbuSeru, which required participants to pay only Rp 12,000 (83 US cents) for a chance to win a range of luxury items.

With a balance of Rp 14,000 in his Bukalapak account, he spontaneously clicked on the image of a car without expecting to win.

The next day, Dedi was told that he would be taking home a three-door Mini Cooper.

Dedi told kompas.com that he had previously joined similar programs, but never won a thing.

However, after the handover ceremony, Dedi has yet to take home the car.

Instead, he had decided to sell the car with help from Bukalapak as he could not afford to pay its vehicle tax.

Bukalapak corporate communication manager Evi Andarini said the Mini Cooper winner actually did not need to pay taxes on the car, as it was not considered a prize but was part of a buy-and-sell promotional activity.

But Dedi would still need to pay an annual vehicle tax as well as other administration fees.

“The vehicle tax is quite high. Since the beginning, I wanted to sell it, because I don’t how I’m going to pay the tax,” he said.

Dedi predicted that the vehicle tax would cost him around Rp 20 million. With that in mind, Dedi chose to sell the Mini Cooper and save the money for his family. (jes/kes)
