ith live-in partners still a sensitive topic in India, Luka Chuppi, from director Laxman Utekar, explores the subject with a sense of humor.
Luka Chuppi is a film about a couple that begin a live-in relationship without getting married.
Although many Indians are conservative when it comes to relationships, many young people prefer to “get to know each other better” before tying the knot.
The film stars Karthik Aryan, who plays Guddu Shukla, and Kriti Sanon, who plays Rashmi Trivedi.
The film touches on a sensitive issue in India, which director Laxman Utekar gives a good dose of humor.
The film starts with reporter Guddu Shukla falling in love with his colleague Rashmi Trivedi. As their love blossoms, Guddu decides to propose but Rashmi instead suggests a live-in relationship.
Humor ensues when the two are caught by Guddu’s brother in law, Babulal, played by Pankaj Tripathi.
Writer Rohan Shankar touches on issues of discrimination against women and caste discrimination with a high dose of wit and humor while relaying a strong message.
The success of Luka Chuppi comes from its well-written script, which Utekar brings out with good production.
Although there are some unrealistic moments, such as when Guddu proposes to Rashmi to spite his brother, despite only knowing her for a short while, these can be overlooked.
Aryan plays his role dutifully as a young man who lives according to the moral values given to him by his parents. Although he is too good looking for the kind of family he is in, it is forgivable. Aryan’s exquisite portrayal brings a lot of fun to the film.
Sanon on the other hand plays a young, valiant and courageous woman who is adamant about doing what she wants despite having a father who is a tough politician.
Other actors try to bring more humor to the movie, including Pankaj Tripathi, who dresses in unusual clothes. Triparthi tries his best to be funny but unfortunately, because of his clothes, he rarely succeeds.
Atul Srivastava, who plays Guddu's father Badripasad, and Alka Amin, who plays Guddu’s mother Shakuntala, give good performances in their own little ways. They both play typical Indian parents who have become flexible with the new generation.
There is never a dull moment in Luka Chuppi. Even after the film ends there is a dance clip featuring Sanon and Aryan. Look out for the songs “Poster Lagwa Do” and “Coca Cola”. (ste)
