Constructing eco-friendly homes and office towers can make a lasting impact on the environment.
Environmental campaigns, such as saving energy or using public transportation, are easy to find in Indonesia. However, a campaign on sustainable homes and office towers is almost unheard-of, although it can help us significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2018 found that a 1.5 degree Celsius increase in Earth’s temperature would lead to negative environmental impacts, including heatwaves, sea level rise and species loss.
From their construction to operation, buildings around the globe accounted for 36 percent of total energy use and 39 percent of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2017, according to the 2018 Global Status Report by the United Nations Environment Program.
“This is very significant,” Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI) chairman Iwan Prijanto said in a recent discussion in Jakarta organized by the global Schneider Electric energy management company.
“It can be said that the buildings sector is the largest contributor of emissions, even when compared to the transportation and industry sectors.”
