oogle Doodles has highlighted Indonesia’s general election – said to be the largest single-day election in the world – that is being held across the nation on Wednesday, April 17.

The doodle shows six individuals lining up to cast their votes in a ballot box. The individuals are illustrated to represent the country's cultural diversity across ethnicities, religions and age groups.

The illustration, which heads the Google Doodles front page, is accompanied by a speech box titled “Indonesia Elections 2019”. The box contains a link to a dedicated search page that lists the latest news on the elections from local and international media.

In a related YouTube video, Google states: “For the first time in the country’s history, the president, the vice president and members of the People’s Consultant Assembly (MPR) will be elected on the same day with over 190 million eligible voters.”

The video continues, “The legislative election will see over 240,000 candidates competing for over 20,000 seats in the MPR and local councils for provinces and cities/regencies all being contested, with over 8,000 competing for the People's Representative Council seats alone. The election has thus been described as ‘the most complicated single-day ballot in global history’.”

Google Doodles has published a variety of illustrations that celebrate anniversaries and other events in Indonesia, including renowned author Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s 92nd birthday in February 2017 and the annual homebound exodus (mudik) during last year’s Idul Fitri. (wng)
