once-in-a-generation wine festival called Fête des Vignerons is slated to run between July 18 and August 11 in Vevey, Switzerland.
The festival commemorates local viticultural traditions that have existed since the time of the Roman empire.
A statement released by the Royal Savoy Hotel and Spa in Lausanne said the festival was inaugurated in 1797 and was last held in 1999.
In relation to the festival, the Lausanne-based hotel and spa is offering its “Vintage Lavaux” package that enables guests to taste wines from its namesake region, located in the Vaud canton where Lausanne and Vevey are also situated.
Among the wines to be sampled are Chasselas, Pinot noir and Gamay. Considering that Switzerland only exports very little of its wine, the hotel suggests a trip to the wine region itself as the best way to enjoy the beverage.
The "Vintage Lavaux” package also includes an excursion to a vineyard in the region, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site overlooking Lake Geneva.

The 830 hectares of terraced vineyards, which date back to the 11th century, earned UNESCO World Heritage status because of the unique agricultural technique controlled by the Benedictine and Cistercian monks in the past. Some of the steepest vineyards reach up to 350 meters above Lake Geneva.
Those who book the package may expect a private chauffeur-driven excursion to a winery in the Lavaux vineyards and lunch with the winemaker.
Fête des Vignerons will be an open-air spectacle where thousands of singers, musicians and actors who are residents of the area will take part. The festival is also set to involve director Daniele Finzi Pasca whose portfolio includes Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo and the closing ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and Turin. (vit/mut)
