Mount Bromo jazz festival celebrates diversity

Themed Jazz Bersaksi untuk Ibu Pertiwi (Jazz Testifies for the Motherland), the festival returned with popular musicians, including Tompi, Gugun Blues Shelter, Idang Rasjidi Project featuring Mus Mudjiono, French quartet Voyager 4, Chandra Darusman Project, Djaduk Ferianto’s Ring of Fire featuring Didi Kempot and more.

he 11th Jazz Gunung Bromo (Mount Bromo Jazz) music festival was held at Jiwa Jawa Resorts Amphitheater in Probolinggo, East Java, on July 26-27.

Themed Jazz Bersaksi untuk Ibu Pertiwi (Jazz Testifies for the Motherland), the festival returned with popular musicians, including Tompi, Gugun Blues Shelter, Idang Rasjidi Project featuring Mus Mudjiono, French quartet Voyager 4, Chandra Darusman Project, Djaduk Ferianto’s Ring of Fire featuring Didi Kempot and more.

Among the first day’s performers were Debu and Voyager 4.

The former, which is a group of Muslim musicians, performed Sufi dances.

Meanwhile, Voyager 4 presented a collaboration between music and science.

The venue, located at 2,000 meters above sea level, is cold at night. However, the weather did not curb the crowd's enthusiasm for the open-air festival.

Speaking of the performers, Tompi said that he really appreciated the diversity of genres being showcased in the festival.

 “I’m more into pop jazz, while there are [also] blues [performers],” he said, adding that the variety created a more diverse audience. (jes/mut)
