ndonesian furniture designers are invited to participate in a competition to have their works sold and showcased at the 2020 Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italy.

The 2019 Open Call Indonesia Creation (OCIC) competition was officially launched on Monday as part of a collaboration between the Indonesian Furniture Designers Association (HDMI) and digital portal Abbasource.com.

"For this year's OCIC, we are focusing on table and chair designs and products. We might expand to other products in the coming years as well, such as lighting, home accessories and other living products," HDMI chairman Ira Samri said in a statement.

Tables and chairs were chosen as the focus because of their continuously high demand from the international living industry.

According to Ira, designers and furniture makers could register their works and finished products at Abbasource.com/ocic2019/ by Oct. 15.

"Participants who are already HDMI members can register using their membership number. Meanwhile, nonmembers will automatically become a member after filling out a form and meet the requirements stated on the portal," she added.

The submitted works will be selected by a team of curators comprising interior and design practitioners, such as Fabianus K and Noel Febry from HDMI and Artura Insanindo principal designer Diana Nazir.

Among the competition's criteria are aesthetical and ergonomic aspects, as well as production and pricing, Diana said.

Abbasource.com itself, which was also officially launched on Monday and aims to help talented designers and furniture makers bring their high-quality Indonesian furniture to the global market, will help market the selected works at the 2020 Salone del Mobile, which will run from April 21 to 26.

The portal hosts a Co-Creator Zone, where members can have their products displayed.

Established on Oct. 28, 2010, HDMI has over 200 members comprising academics and practitioners spread across Jakarta, Surabaya in East Java, Bali, Yogyakarta, Surakarta and Jepara in Central Java and Bandung in West Java.

The annual Salone del Mobile, which was launched in 1961, is regularly attended by more than 370,000 visitors, some 5,000 journalists, 2,300 global companies and participants from 188 countries. (kes)
