Data says ghostly horror and drama flicks top box office charts so naturally that lures filmmakers to produce too many in those genres every year. But where is the Indonesian film industry going?
umbers do not lie, but they are not yet the language used in determining the direction the Indonesian film will take moving forward after seeing viewership increase since 2015.
Thanks to the technology that enables ticket purchasing online, the number of viewers provides preliminary data for calling a film a success, or not.
But, apparently, such data is not enough and is often misleading.
Data collected by the Film Indonesia website revealed that by 2018 there were 51 million viewers, a 20 percent increase compared to the year before, and correspondingly the volume of features film production has exceeded 100 titles per year.
From 2016 to 2018, according to Film Indonesia co-director Lisabona Rahman, one out of four titles screened in theaters was a ghost-haunted horror, with a mix of comedy and lewdness. The genre, together with dramas and comedies, dominated the screens during the period and the trend continued to this year.
“At a glance, the data we collected shows a positive correlation between genres with their success in netting viewers,” said Lisabona.
