Viennetta ice cream will be available as a limited edition item at local stores as well as online stores.
iennetta, a legendary ice cream product of consumer goods manufacturer PT Unilever Indonesia, is set to make a comeback this Ramadhan.
According to a statement from Wall’s as the brand the ice cream is sold under, Viennetta will be available in limited edition at local minimarkets and supermarkets starting April 1, as well as online stores like KlikIndomaret and Happy Fresh in the near future.
Viennetta is a bar of soft ice cream decorated with layers of wavy chocolate and vanilla ribbons. Wall’s launched the product for the first time as a Christmas specialty in 1982 in the United Kingdom.
Considered a premium treat for Indonesian families in the 1990s, the ice cream was discontinued in the early 2000s in the country but still sold in some European countries.
“Viennetta ice cream comeback will make its fans recall their happy memories, as well as quench the thirst of curiosity for those who have not had the experience of enjoying it,” Arya Bahupringga, PT Unilever Indonesia’s head of ice cream marketing, said in the statement.

According to Arya, the idea to bring back Viennetta occurred after a hashtag #KembalikanViennetta (bring back Viennetta) went viral in 2018. One fan even initiated a petition on change.org, urging the company to bring back his childhood treat.

“I never had the chance to eat this,” Twitter user @mardial said in 2018, which is probably among the first tweets that brings back the collective memory of the ice cream.

In the 1990s, the ice cream was sold for Rp 30,000 (US$1.80) a box, which with inflation, is equal to Rp 150,000 today. Its comeback price, however, has not been announced. (gis/kes)
