he annual documentary film forum Docs By The Sea's mentoring programs are set to return on Aug. 13-28 with 29 selected projects from eight Southeast Asian countries.
The selected projects include 12 documentaries by Indonesian filmmakers and eight completed films by Docs By The Sea alumni.
The Storytelling Lab and Editing Lab programs aim to help the participants in creating grant-winning pitches to manifest their projects, including by involving film editors and experts to mentor them on how to dig for potential stories, compose strong storytelling and maximize story structure.
The project teams will be given the opportunity to pitch their works in a one-on-one session with donors, broadcasters, distributors, film festivals and other industry practitioners in the international documentary scene on Aug. 26-28.
According to a statement, the programs were initially slated to take place in Bali, however they will now be conducted entirely online as a safety measurement amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Initiated by non-profit organization In-Docs and the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, Docs By The Sea was first launched in 2017 and has helped catapult 74 documentary projects in Southeast Asia to new audiences. The alumni have reportedly had their films screened at 40 international film festivals, including Busan International Film Festival in South Korea, IDFA in the Netherlands and Visions du Réel in Switzerland. Four documentaries by Docs by the Sea alumni have also been broadcast in the Inside Lens program for Japanese TV station NHK. (gis/kes)
