reative complex M Bloc Space in South Jakarta announced its second development phase on an area covering around 1,500 square meters on Thursday.

After the completion of this second phase, its total area will be around 8,000 square meters.

Managed by PT Ruang Riang Milenial, M Bloc Space boasts a music venue, trendy restaurants, coffee shops and a bar as well as a beauty clinic and a record store. Since its opening in late 2019, the place has made a name for itself as a hangout place for Jakarta youngsters.

The complex was previously an abandoned housing complex owned by state-owned securities paper and bill printing company Peruri.

According to PT Ruang Riang Milenial cofounder Handoko Hendroyono, the second development phase will focus on repurposing two abandoned warehouses in the complex into the M Bloc Market, Museum Gallery and Community Hall.

The M Bloc Market will serve as an ecofriendly market distributing small businesses' products, such as coffee, fruits and vegetables. Museum Gallery will display historical artifacts of Peruri as Indonesia’s bill printer. Meanwhile, Community Hall will be a multifunction space for workshops, creative discussions and educational activities.

“Today’s generation is a conscious consumer generation that has empathy for environment and kindness. This spirit of kindness is growing to be a lifestyle. Responsibility is a keyword, as well as the local potential,” Handoko Hendroyono said during an online press conference on Thursday.

The development will be led by architect Jacob Gato Sura and Arcadia Architects team. Jacob was the one who handled the complex's first development phase: redesigning the Peruri workforce dormitory and production warehouse into the creative space we know today.

The second development phase of M Bloc Space is to kick off this month, and the revamped complex is slated to open for the public next year. (kes)
