lassical pianist Jonathan Kuo will be among participants of an online recital this Sunday, to be livestreamed on YouTube channel Jakarta Conservatory of Music starting at 5 p.m.

In the 60-minute Young Steinway Recital, the 18-year-old will present another joyous affair from world classical composers from the 18th to 20th century.

Jo, as he is fondly called, will play Johannes Brahms’ “Four Ballades Op. 10”, Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Appassionata” and “Waldstein” piano sonatas, Franz Schubert’s “Wanderer Fantasy”, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Fantasy in C Minor - KV 475”, Béla Bartók’s “Piano Sonata Sz. 802, and Robert Schumann’s “Carnaval Op. 9”.

The Bandung-based pianist, who is a student at the Jakarta Conservatory of Music, is among the Young Steinway Artists from Indonesia who has been globally recognized.

He has won several international competitions, such as the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition in the United States, Japan-based Kawai Asia Piano Competition, ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition, Thailand Chopin International Piano Competition and more.

“There are some distinctive differences between a live performance among the audience and an online performance, in which I can’t interact with other musicians or the audience.

“The sound output is surely much different, so I suggest the audience attend the recital by using headphones or a high-resolution sound system,” said Jo.

Iswargia R. Sudarno of the Jakarta Conservatory of Music said it continued to present online recitals to maintain public appreciation of classical music and to hone the skills of the musicians.

“Music concerts are a cultural activity that should not be absent, especially during the pandemic. The advantage of watching recitals online is the audience can enjoy the music anywhere without having to stay focused as in a concert hall,” he added. (ste)
