Eight groups performed during the 2018 Children's Wayang (puppet) Festival at the Sriwedari Theater in Surakarta, Central Java, on July 5 and 6.
Prior to their performance, the participants – mostly elementary school students – were helped by their parents or coaches to put on their makeup and costumes. A few of them were able to prepare themselves.
These children were enthusiastic about taking part in the festival. Even their parents seemed happy and supportive of their children.
The event was organized to introduce children to their own culture as well as emphasizing Surakarta as a city of culture.
Surakarta Mayor FX Hadi Rudyatmo said his administration would allow all traditional studios to perform at the City Hall verandah. [yan]
