With refreshing sips of sake, a spot of medieval horseback samurai archery and solemn Shinto rites, Japan rang in a new imperial era in a festive mood Wednesday as Naruhito became its 126th emperor.
Naruhito officially became emperor at midnight, when the country also began the new imperial era of Reiwa (beautiful harmony) but the transition was formalized in a ceremony on Wednesday.
