The 575 newly elected members of the House of Representatives were sworn into office on Tuesday night, amid ongoing nationwide protests that reflect mounting public distrust of lawmakers in the legislative process.
Lawmaker Puan Maharani, former coordinating human development and culture minister and daughter of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri, has been elected the 2019-2024 House speaker, making her the country's first female House speaker. (JP/Seto Wardhana)
