In anticipation of Mount Merapi’s possible eruption, the Borobudur Conservation Agency covered up 32 stupas in the eighth level of the Borobudur temple in Magelang, Central Java. The agency may cover the remaining stupas if volcanic activity increases.
Back in 2010, the ninth century temple was affected by a major eruption. At the time, acidic volcanic ash from Mt. Merapi covered 72 stupas.
