T Samsung Electronics Indonesia (SEIN) launched a new touchscreen tablet PC, the 7-inch Galaxy Tab, over the weekend in a bid for a share of Indonesia’s tablet market.

PT SEIN mobile marketing department head Eka Anwar said the handheld device was a touchscreen PC tablet that could make phone call and handle video conferencing.

“The device is more for people who are looking for a multimedia experience while still remaining connected to other people,” he said.

On the tablet’s 7-inch screen, Eka said its size was more comfortable when compared to devices that used larger or smaller screens.

Eka also said touchscreens would be the future for handheld devices.

“The global trend is going to be touchscreens, although Qwerty devices were still strong in Indonesia,” he said.

The Galaxy Tab includes a locally developed application, E-reading, which includes publications from the Gramedia and MRA groups.

Using Android 2.2 as its operating system, Samsung sold more than a thousand units of the Galaxy Tab during the product’s launch on Saturday.

The device was sold at a discount of Rp 5.99 million (US$671) as compared to its regular price of
Rp 6.99 million. The tablets included a 6-month data plan package with Indosat. — JP
