ANDUNG: Bosscha Observatory is working on its plans to monitor the expected total lunar eclipse.
The eclipse is predicted to occur on June 16 and last for four hours. Bosscha Observatory said it would send astronomers to six locations across Indonesia to observe the phenomenon.
The six locations will include two in West Java and one each in Aceh, Pakanbaru, Yogyakarta and Mataram.
The total lunar eclipse is expected to take place twice this year, with the second in December.
Bosscha Observatory director Hakim Malasan said the eclipse could be observed from any part of Indonesia from 1:25 a.m. to 5:04 a.m, Jakarta time.
He said the eclipse would peak at 3.14 a.m. after the sun had began to block the moon at 2.25 a.m.
“The images will be recorded on the Internet to provide the visual experience for those who cannot watch the eclipse,” he said on Tuesday.
According to Hakim, the eclipse will also be made a precursor to determine the start of the fasting month, adding that for astronomers, the phenomenon will help explain the gradation of atmospheric clarity. — JP
