Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said he would add to the list of designated nonsmoking areas in the city to provide a healthier environment.
“We will extend the smoking ban to malls and other public places, such as the National Monument [Monas] area,” Fauzi said, as quoted by tribunnews.com on Sunday.
He added that the Jakarta administration would gradually reduce the number of cigarette ads across
Indonesia’s capital city.
“We cannot eliminate all cigarette ads; however, we will certainly reduce the number of the ads,” Fauzi said.
Fauzi also asked Jakartans to take part in supervising the 2010 gubernatorial decree, which bans smoking in certain areas.
Your comments:
Seriously? Smoking isn’t the issue here in Jakarta. If you want to improve the quality of life in the capitol and increase the health of the populace, you have to solve the problem of pollution. Get rid of all the old cars and motorcycles.
Increase the amount of tax on cars. Decrease the number of corrupt cops and start enforcing your laws. There is no point in claiming to try and make Jakarta better when the larger issues are being overlooked.
Limiting the amount of places we can smoke doesn’t decrease the amount we smoke; it just moves us to more public areas like the lobby of a mall where everyone goes. Stop trying to fix the country through stupid, waste-of-time, idealistic rules and regulations.

I agree with Chris but smoking should be further restricted. For example, I find it disgusting that people can smoke where kids practice sports, like in Gelora Senayan.
Again, the masters of pollutants are old buses that pass the emission test after the operators bribe relevant officers. People also burn trash everywhere.
Look at any other city in ASEAN. Only in Jakarta will you find that choking smell of smoke in the air. Outlaw and fine trash burners. That will be a major contribution to healthier living in Greater
Jakarta.
