View all search resultsPolice in the Riau Islands are coordinating with the Indonesian Embassy in Berlin to uncover an alleged case of human trafficking that has left several people stranded in Germany after they were lured by promises of training and certification.
fficers from the Batam, Rempang and Barelang police in the Riau Islands are investigating a suspected case of human trafficking to Germany using student exchange or vocational training programs as cover.
The fraudulent scheme came to light after several individuals who had fallen victim to the ploy, including students from outside Batam, filed reports with the Barelang Police after they felt cheated on arriving in Europe’s largest economy.
They are still currently in Germany.
Barelang Police chief Sr. Comr. Zaenal Arifin confirmed receiving reports related to the case, and said that data related to the case had been synchronized.
“Victims were not only from Batam but also from outside [Batam],” Zaenal told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.
The interjurisdictional probe is being coordinated by police attaché Sr. Comr. Shinto Sinaga of the Indonesian Embassy in Berlin, who is expected to arrive on Saturday.
Meanwhile, a joint team involving the Barelang and Riau Islands police will study prior cases using the same modus operandi.
