A

ustralia has agreed to strengthen its strategic relations with Indonesia, showing a commitment to strengthen sustainable defense relations between the two countries.

The pledge was made during a courtesy call from Australian Chief of Defense Force (CDF) Adm. David Johnston to Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin at the Defense Ministry in Jakarta on Friday, the ministry said in a statement.

Johnston was in Indonesia to preside over the 13th Australia-Indonesia High-Level Committee (Ausindo HLC) meeting.

Both parties discussed several strategic issues, including strengthening existing bilateral cooperation in various sectors.

“Johnston and Sjafrie also discussed future cooperation development plans, such as increasing people-to-people contact among military personnel, strengthening institutional relations between defense institutions and widening cooperation in training, education and cybersecurity,” the ministry said in the statement.

The officials also discussed the implementation of outcomes from the recent Defense Ministers’ meeting, including cooperation on deepening people-to-people ties, Special Forces engagement, and joint exercises in Morotai, North Maluku, the Australian Embassy said in a press statement.

Both countries held the "Ninth Australia–Indonesia Foreign and Defense Ministers’ 2+2 Meeting" on Aug. 28 in Canberra.
