The private event was held on Tuesday night at Moerdiono’s house in East Jakarta. A unique mix of Islamic and Javanese rituals were evident, as attendees offered Muslim prayers while a group of Javanese gamelan musicians serenaded traditional mantras believed “to alleviate Moerdiono’s soul in the afterlife”.
The music originated from Sumedang Larang, an Islamic kingdom in West Java that ruled the area from 900-1601. Meanwhile, the mantras are a legacy of Sunan Kalijaga, one of the nine revered saints of Islam.
“Folks from the Solo Palace will chant traditional mantras created during Sunan Kalijaga’s era. Pak Moer and I love the legacy of our own culture,” she said.
