Opera

Jakarta Opera and Musicasa will stage German composer Engelbert Humperdinck’s most successful work Hansel and Gretel. The opera, premiered in 1893, has become a worldwide favorite based on the children’s story of Hansel and Gretel who were lured into eating a gingerbread house owned by a witch in the middle of the forest. Four hands piano by Prajna Indrawati and Priska Budiharjo along with Hansel & Gretel Children’s Choir will accompany the two-hour opera, which will be presented in English. The opera will take place at Usmar Ismail Hall, next to Pasar Festival in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Dec. 21. The ticket prices range from Rp 100,000 (US$11) to Rp 200,000. For more information and reservations, please contact Jakarta Opera at 081514269616 (in Bahasa Indonesia) or 081311007902 (in English) or Musicasa at (021) 63861236.

The first GIZ Forclime Photocontest 2011 in Indonesia ended in October with over 2,600 photo entries uploaded online. The photo contest, aimed at raising awareness of our dependency on forests, is a part of the JERIN (Jerman-Indonesia) series of cultural, educational and artistic events. The participants were encouraged to present their visual perception of forests. They submitted their photos in two categories – People and Forests and A Day in the Forest. An exhibition that features the work of the winners is running from Dec.15 to 23 at the Ministry of Forestry’s Manggala Wanabakti on Jl. Gatot Subroto. The exhibition opens to the public every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the exhibition, please log on to www.forclime-photocontest.com

Music

Setiawan Djody, Iwan Fals and Sawung Jabo are collaborating again under Kantata Barock. This time, they will perform without the late renowned poet W.S. Rendra or Yockie Suryoprayogo. Previously, they used the name Kantata Takwa in 1990, which was later changed into Kantata Samsara in 1998 and changed again into Kantata Revolvere without Iwan Fals. The senior musicians’ show will feature a performance by the band Kotak, which represents the younger generation of musicians. The gig will be held on Dec. 30 at the main stadium of Gelora Bung Karno in Senayan. For more information about the concert, log on to rajakarcis.com.
