AKARTA: A regulation in lieu of law (Perpu) to overhaul the Constitutional Court (MK) is illegal and unnecessary, according to legislators from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
Eva Kusuma Sundari, a member of the House of Representatives' Commission III overseeing legal affairs, said a Perpu should only be issued in dire situations related to the issue of welfare.
'I think the Perpu should be rejected by the House because it is not in line with the Constitution,' Eva said on Sunday, as quoted by tribunnews.com. She noted the Perpu, which mandates the formation of a special team by the Supreme Court, the President and the House to review the court's rulings, had the potential to intervene in state matters.
Another Commission III PDI-P legislator Trimedya Pandjaitan noted a fundamental flaw in the Perpu, namely a paragraph that explained that the Perpu existed to protect the court from disgraced justices.
