ormer Foreign Ministry secretarygeneral Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat has claimed that he was merely following the instructions of then president Megawati Soekarnoputri and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono when organizing 12 international conferences.

During his graft trial on Wednesday, Sudjadnan said that both Megawati and Yudhoyono had instructed him to organize international conferences at short notice, leaving no time for a tender to be organized.

'The budget was disbursed only one week before the start of some of the conferences. It was not possible for me to cancel the conferences. The country's reputation was at stake. And I was only executing orders from the president. I have right here an official letter from Bu Mega,' Sudjadnan said, referring to Megawati.

Sudjadnan said that under the Yudhoyono administration, many conferences he organized were held in emergency situations, including an international conference on the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and counterterrorism conferences.

Sudjadnan is standing trial for his alleged role in organizing international conferences in 2004 and 2005 that resulted in Rp 18 billion (US$1.47 million) in state losses. Sudjadnan has asked several public figures, including Yudhoyono, Megawati and then vice president Jusuf Kalla, to testify on his behalf.
