he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Wednesday questioned graft convict Muhammad Nazaruddin, a former treasurer of the Democratic Party, as a witness in an alleged graft case related to the development of Wisma Atlet SEA Games in Jakabaring and South Sumatra Function Hall in 2010-2011.

The KPK has already named South Sumatra Public Works (PU) Cipta Karya Agency office head Rizal Abdullah a suspect, and is now investigating the alleged involvement of South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin in the case.

Nazaruddin is partway through a 7-year prison term at Sukamiskin Penitentiary in Bandung, West Java, following a ruling by the Supreme Court's appeal panel, which also ordered him to pay Rp 300 million (US$24,479.82) in fines. Nazaruddin was declared guilty of bribing the youth and sports minister's former secretary Wafid Muharam in the Wisma Atlet Jakabaring graft case.

'I've been questioned regarding Pak Rizal. It is likely that the commission is trying to determine what course of action to take with Pak Alex Noerdin and to ascertain how much money the South Sumatra governor received,' Nazaruddin told journalists at the KPK headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara new agency.

'If Pak Alex received 2.5 percent of fees [from the total project value], how much money did House of Representatives members Mirwan Amir and Olly Dondokambey receive? What about Wayan Koster, who has not yet been named a suspect? What evil spirit has protected him from being named a suspect?' he went on.

Mirwan is a former House budgetary board (Banggar) head from the Democratic Party faction, while Olly is also former a Banggar head and member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). Both men were allegedly involved in the project.

The KPK said in a previous statement that it had continued to investigate the possible involvement of Alex Noerdin in the Wisma Atlet Jakabaring graft case.

'We don't know yet about Pak Alex. We're hoping to get information from the PU official that we can use as a basis to follow up the case, but it depends on the process,' said KPK deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto on Oct.1. (dyl/ebf)
