he Jambi Corruption Court sentenced a member of the Jambi Provincial Legislative Council, Irmanto, to three years in jail as he was found guilty of involvement in embezzling social service aid funds worth Rp 2.5 billion (US$197,000) in Kerinci regency in 2008.
The money was initially intended to help build houses of worships in the regency.
Four of Irmanto's colleagues, who were former Kerinci Legislative Council members, were also sentenced to three years in jail. They are Mursimin, Novantri, Ade Utama and Said Abdullah.
The five defendants were found guilty of violating two paragraphs of Article 8 of Law No. 31/1999 on corruption eradication in lieu of Law No. 20/2001 and Article 55 of the Criminal Code.
Each of the defendants was ordered to pay a Rp 50 million fine.
The jail sentence was lighter than the public prosecutor's demand for seven years and a fine of Rp 200 million.
"We decided to sentence the defendants to three years in jail and ordered them to pay a Rp 50 million fine," presiding judge Supraja said on Thursday.
All of the defendants, through their lawyers, considered whether to appeal.(hhr)
