ulogadung Police officers caught eight out of a group of 20 alleged juvenile motorcycle thieves on Jl. Raya Bekasi Timur in East Jakarta.
East Jakarta Police criminal unit chief Tejo Yuantoro said on Wednesday that the thieves, grouped under the name Geng Motor Babe (Babe Motorcycle Gang), were mostly teenagers.
The suspects, aged between 15 to 17 years old, were identified only as YBH, P, DJ, AP, FYS, DA, MP and AF. They were nabbed on Sunday.
'The gang usually played around the Rawa Kuning area in Pulogebang, Cakung. However, they operated in three districts ' Cakung, Jatinegara and Duren Sawit,' Tejo said, as quoted tribunnews.com.
He said the police confiscated evidence including a cell phone, a sickle, motorcycle key duplication tool, a fake license plate and four motorcycles.
'They are cruel and often assault their victims who have tried to fight back. Their targets are solo motorcyclists,' he said.
He added that the suspects would be charged with violating Article 365 of the Criminal Code on theft with violence, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.
Police first arrested DJ, which led to the arrest of seven other group members. 'We interrogated him in order to catch the other members,' he said.
Tejo said that according to DJ, an assault and robbery was conducted to mark the birthday of every member of the gang.
