span style="line-height: 1.6em;">Indonesian women's doubles pair Greysia Polii and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari left badminton lovers heartbroken after bowing out to unseeded Malaysians Vivian Kah Mun Hoo and Khe Wei Woon 21-17, 21-19 in the second round of the BCA Indonesia Open badminton championship on Thursday.

With one of her legs bandaged, Greysia said they performed below par due to health issues in the match at Bung Karno Indoor Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

“We’re OK with the result and we have to accept the defeat. We realize that our condition was not 100 percent fit,” she said after the match, revealing that she sustained an injury to her right thigh before the championship.

Nitya, meanwhile, was badly injured during the Dong Feng Citroen Badminton Asia Championships 2016 in April. Although she tried to give her best during the match against Mun Hoo and Khe Wei, her leg did not function properly. The weakness was used by their opponents to win the match, she said.

“Our opponents directed the shuttlecock more frequently to me in both the first and second game,” she added.

Greysia said the match was more to fight their poor physical condition than to defeat their opponents.

However, they both looked to be maintaining a competitive atmosphere ahead of the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August.

They promised to recover from their injuries and train hard for the quadrennial event.

Separately, Mun Hoo and Khe Wei were thrilled with the match result. They said they were nervous at the beginning but overcame it to win the match against the much higher-ranked players.

"Nitya’s leg was a little bit injured and that’s why they played more tense. We wanted to win very much. Luckily we managed to do so,” Mun Hoo said.

Despite the windy conditions on court, Wei Woon said the pair was still able to focus and enjoy the match. (yan)
