Looking Good: 10 Beauty Minutes with Maudy Ayunda

PHOTOS VIA L’OREAL.

Maudy Ayunda, famed for her acting chops and strong singing voice, recently made milestones when she was named L’Oreal Indonesia’s newest—and youngest—brand ambassador.

The 21-year-old, who skyrocketed to fame after earning a rising star nod at the 2006 MTV Indonesia Movie Awards for the film Untuk Rena (For Rena), is no stranger to glamorous transformations in the makeup chair.

J+ sat down with Maudy, who released her second studio album, Moments, in 2015, for a Skype chat on beauty and cosmetics, as the down-to-earth star took a break from rushing between classes at Oxford University in the UK.

Do you like to wear makeup every day?

I do wear makeup everyday—I mean not when I’m at home. When I’m out and about, I put on some mascara and a more neutral lipstick color. For special occasions, I definitely like to explore more. Sometimes, in the entertainment business, I have to wear something a bit more va-va-voom, which means the makeup has to complement that.

Are you a red-lipstick or smokey-eyed girl?

I always think I’m one kind of girl. Then I put on that thing that I thought I didn’t like and I’m like “I can be this girl”. It’s cool that makeup can help you expand how you see yourself. You think you can’t be cute—and then you put on the J.Lo shade from [the L’Oreal lip range] La Vie En Rose and you’re like “it works for me”. It’s all about exploring and seeing how different colors work.

What’s your skin care routine?

I wash my face every day, every morning and every night, and then put on toner and day or night cream.

I’m quite crazy about sunscreen. I really realize how important it is.

Any particular faves?

I’ve got the L’Oreal UV spray [UV Perfect Aqua Essence City UV Mist SPF 50+], which I bring everywhere. It’s literally a spray that you can put over your makeup when you’re on the go. It’s pretty crazy. I’m always running to and from class.

If you put on cream, you really have to touch up every three hours, so [the spray] is really useful on the go. You can put it over makeup because you always think [groaning] “but I’ve got makeup on” and you don’t want to mess it up.

You also said you liked L’Oreal’s Fall Resist 3x Anti Hair Fall Shampoo.

It just smells really good. It’s for hair loss. In the UK, everyone is experiencing it. You’re more prone to hair loss because of the water.

Do you change shampoos frequently in the UK due to changing seasons?

You know, I really don’t think it’s the weather. I really think it’s the water. They have a lot more iron, [which] makes your hair a bit rougher, so you have to have extra protection.

What’s the difference in your beauty routine in Indonesia and in Oxford?

Obviously, when I’m in Indonesia my [hair and makeup] team is much larger. A lot of the stuff that I do in Oxford is very self-done. I have a lot of time to myself and you can do those things alone. It’s really cool because when I go to an event like a ball where I’m dressed up, people always ask “Wow, did you get your hair and makeup done?” I’m like “No! I’ve just had lots of practice.” I feel self-sufficient. When I want to look great, I can do it alone if I want to.

Describe your love affair with cosmetics.

It’s going to be a long-term relationship. It’s very serious. I was quickly introduced to it, even before I reached an age where I would buy my own makeup. I started in awe, because I was much younger. Someone would be putting something [on my face] and I’d be like “What is this?”

It’s a very intimate relationship right now. I’ve really been exploring a lot more these past two years. There’s been a lot more movement right now in makeup. It’s becoming a huge thing. You’ve got these new [trends], like the whole eyebrow phenomenon, the whole shading or bronzing phenomenon and the whole matte lipstick thing.

Personal beauty icon?

Blake Lively. She has this really natural, grounded side of her. She’s such a natural beauty and then—boom! It’s the red carpet and it’s crazy. She never goes wrong with her red-carpet looks: Her hair and makeup is just very well done and yet she still has that girl-next-door vibe. She can do so many looks and yet be true to herself […] and still come off looking really great.

Final beauty tips for our readers?

Really get to know your skin. Get to know the type of hair you have. Get to know your surroundings and how you fit in. This is one of the lessons that I’ve learned in the past two years, when I’ve been flying back and forth. I found out that I have combination skin, which is tricky. In cold weather, I’m dry. Under tropical weather I’m more normal. I really have to change up my skin regime when I fly back and forth. Once I did that, it really helped me with skin care and makeup.
