undreds of people came to Tangerang District Court in Tangerang, Banten, on Tuesday to demand the death penalty for three suspects, who were accused of raping and sadistically killing EP, 24, on May 17.

The crowd were the relatives and neighbors of the victim. “We come here with 10 pickup trucks to demand the death penalty for the perpetrators,” said Kusnadi, one of the demonstrators at the district court on Tuesday as reported by tribunnews.com.

They packed the court room in which the prosecutors would read their charge against RAI, one of the suspects.

The raping and killing of EP occurred at a dormitory of a company in Dadap, Kosambi, Tangerang, Banten.

The protesters had arrived at the court at 10 a.m. although the trial was scheduled for 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, police officers were deployed to save guard the court, following reports about the oncoming crowd of the victim's neighbors and relatives.

“We have anticipated that there would be a demonstration during the court hearing,” a spokesperson of the Jakarta City Police, Sr. Corm. Awi Setiyono said.

The three suspects were identified only as RAl, RAR and IH. They were being prosecuted with the maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The crowd, rejected the additional punishment of chemical castration as stipulated in a recent regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on sexual violence against children, only wanted the highest form of punishment. “The only suitable sentence against them is the death penalty,” cried the demonstrators.

The sadistic murder allegedly started when RAI, who is the victim’s boyfriend, came to the boarding house for factory workers where EP lives on Thursday evening at 11:30 p.m.. RA, who had only been acquainted with EP for one month, reportedly asked EP to have sex, but she declined his request. Irked, RAI went out the room and met two of his friends RAR and IH.

The three friends allegedly forced their way into the room and committed the offense.

EP’s body was discovered by her friends at PT Polyta Global Mandiri, Eroh, Tikroh and Nopi on Friday. They found that EP’s room was locked from outside and they decided to break into the room. (bbn)
