resident Joko "Jokowi" has said that he hopes Indonesian sportspeople do their best at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil so that the national anthem, “Indonesia Raya”, is played repeatedly there.
"From our homeland, I will wait for the Indonesian anthem to reverberate in Rio de Janeiro," Jokowi told Indonesian athletes set to compete at the Olympic Games at the Presidential Office complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He also hoped Indonesian athletes take home medals. Indonesia has won 27 medals in the 64 years it has participated in this sporting event, since the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland.
"I am waiting for the 28th, 29th, 30th medals and so on. It will make the nation and our people proud," he said, adding that the athletes should proudly represent Indonesia at the games.
"It is our hope that our athletes can show the world that Indonesia is a great and strong nation. We must show that Indonesian people can always maintain fair play and discipline," Jokowi said.
Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi added that the Indonesian contingent would participate in six sports: badminton, athletics, paddling, biking, archery and weightlifting. (bbn)
