jumbotron on Jl. Prapanca, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, that suddenly and inexplicably featured what appeared to be a Japanese adult movie triggered a social media frenzy in the capital on Friday.
Shocked to see such footage, many bystanders took pictures or recorded videos and uploaded them on social media, quickly making the incident go viral.
On Twitter alone, the hashtag #videotron immediately became a trending topic on Friday afternoon.
“Because watching [pornography] on computer monitors is too mainstream. Now South Jakarta has #videotron,” Prasetio Dian Fasesa tweeted on his Twitter account @prasetioprast.
“This is totally terrible; porn movie screening on main road. Anti-mainstream Bro! #videotron,” tweeted Erwyn Rafael on his @ErwynRaffael account.
Meanwhile, Cipluk Carlita on her Twitter account @CiplukCarlita persuaded other users not to continue sharing the viral videos: “#Videotron and South Jakarta are now trending topics. In my humble opinion, we’d better not share the videos. It’s not appropriate to watch.”
Located near a mosque and some meters away from the South Jakarta municipality office, the 24-square-meter jumbotron is reportedly owned by PT Matapena Komunika Advertama, which has rented the content out to PT Transito Adiman Jati Transito Advertising.
The latter offered a clarification statement, saying that the content had been hacked.
“We have detected and found that the content was taken over by someone who sent a virus. There was some sabotage and hacking,” said PT Transito Adiman Jati manager Adrian Wiedarta as quoted by Kompas.com on Friday. “We could not take it off as the password was also held by the hacker.”
Because of the virus, he added, the content was hijacked by a pornography site.
The company, he added, filled content on four jumbotrons across the capital. However, only the one on Jl. Prapanca was hacked on that day.
The porn video played for about five minutes and upset the local residents who immediately sought for a way to turn it off.
With some officials from the South Jakarta municipality, they eventually managed to shut down the jumbotron by switching off the electricity.
“Currently, the jumbotron is off, but the South Jakarta municipality takes this issue seriously,” said South Jakarta spokeswoman Lestari Ady Wiryono.
After consulting with the municipality’s Tax Office and the Jakarta Police, the company reported the incident to the Jakarta Police’s Cyber Crime division.
The Jakarta Police are now investigating the incident.
They have also met with officials from PT Transito Adiman Jati to question them on the matter.
“We are now investigating the incident but we have yet to name a suspect,” said Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono.
