or the second period of the tax amnesty, the tax office will focus more on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and will ask for help from associations such as the traditional market traders association to reach the target.

To encourage them to join the program, the tariffs for SMEs are flat: 0.5 percent for any assets declaration below Rp 10 billion (US $77,000) and 2 percent for any declaration above that threshold. This differs from big taxpayers, which are subject to an increasing tariff in each progressive period.

"For the second period, we still need to explain the program to the SMEs and the target will be segmented. We can work with the association for traditional market traders, or for forestry companies we can work with Environment and Forestry Ministry," the tax office’s international tax director John Hutagaol said during the MarkPlus' discussion in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Mandiri Sekuritas president director Silvano Rumantir predicted that the program would continue to receive significant declarations in the second and third period.

"In the first period the hike happened in the last two weeks, this means people take last-minute decisions, this could happen in the next periods as well," he said.

As of Oct. 3, the program had collected Rp 3.51 quadrillion in assets declarations and Rp 137 trillion repatriations, from total declarations, with 72.81 percent of the total figure being domestic declarations. The amount collected from income fees reached Rp 89.7 trillion, 2.71 percent of it coming from SMEs, both corporate and private taxpayers. (evi)
