P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is set to start his two-day work visit in New Delhi on Monday. He is scheduled to carry out bilateral meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee.

Departing from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta, President Jokowi, accompanied by First Lady Iriana and their entourage, arrived at Palam Airport in New Delhi at 11.30 p.m. local time on Sunday.

During his visit, Jokowi is also scheduled to carry out a meeting with CEOs of several Indian companies and to attend a luncheon meeting with staff members of the Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi and Indonesian citizens in the city before he departs for Tehran on Wednesday.

Jokowi’s visits are in response to PM Modi’s and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s visits to Indonesia in October 2013 and in April 2015 respectively.

The state visits are important given that India and Iran are two countries with equally huge partnership potential, the Presidential Office said in a statement as quoted by Antara News Agency.

India is Indonesia’s biggest trade partner in South Asia and fourth largest partner in the world. The trade value between Indonesia and India amounted to US$ 14.45 billion in 2015.

During his visit, President Jokowi aims to explore more diversified Indonesian exports to India. He will also discuss efforts to increase investment partnerships between the two countries for Indonesia’s raw medical material industry.

Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution, State Secretary Minister Pratikno and Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) head Thomas Trikasih Lembong are participating in the visit, as well. (ebf)
