he Jakarta Police rejected on Wednesday claims made by Buni Yani, the uploader of Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s allegedly blasphemous speech video, in his pretrial hearing on Tuesday that police investigators named him a suspect without following proper procedures.
In Wednesday’s hearing, the police responded to Buni’s claims, saying they had followed all legal procedures, including conducting a case reconstruction.
One police investigator, Comr. Khairuddin, said the case reconstruction was held after they questioned several witnesses on Oct. 25.

“[Buni’s accusation] that a case reconstruction has not yet been held is not true. That’s just the plaintiff’s assumption, which has no legal grounds,” he said at the South Jakarta District Court.
Khairuddin said the police named Buni a suspect after they obtained more than two pieces of evidence as required by the Criminal Code Procedures (KUHAP) and National Police chief Regulation No.14/2012 on investigation procedures.
The police, he added, had in fact obtained four pieces of evidence to back their decision. They comprised witness statements that were interconnected with each other, expert statements, letters written by the suspect and other items.
In Tuesday’s hearing, Buni said his naming as a suspect was invalid because investigators had not implemented proper procedures in investigating his case, such as holding a case reconstruction.
Buni has been named a suspect for allegedly inciting religious and ethnic hatred online after he uploaded a selectively edited video of Ahok’s speech, which showed the non-active governor citing a Quranic verse. (ebf)
