tate-owned energy firm Pertamina aims to increase the portion of cashless transactions at gas stations to 10 percent this year from the current 3 percent through cooperation with state-owned lenders Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) and Bank Mandiri.
Pertamina vice president for retail fuel marketing Affandi said the firm’s gas stations booked last year Rp 274 trillion (US$20.53 billion) in transactions. Under the cooperation with the three banks, Pertamina, Affandi continued, would increase the number of electronic data capture (EDC) machines at its gas stations to facilitate more credit and debit card payments.
“From 5,300 Pertamina gas stations, only around 2,300 stations are equipped with EDC machines. We hope 90 percent of the stations will be equipped with EDC machines within the next two or three years," Affandi said Friday during the Pertamina Fuel Lucky Swipe event in Jakarta.

Nearly all gas stations in major cities are equipped with EDC machines. The company expects to install soon the machines at gas stations in second-tier cities, as the machines would still work well with a reliable GPRS signal in the absence of 3G or 4G networks.
Pertamina has prohibited since Jan.1 gas stations from imposing an additional 3 percent surcharge for credit card payments. If a Pertamina-affiliated gas station imposes a surcharge, customer can report it through Pertamina's call center or social media accounts. (hwa)
