T

he Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) is investigating brochures about Jakarta gubernatorial candidate pair Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno. The brochures allegedly smear the candidates.

"It’s true that Panwaslu [Elections Supervisory Committee] reported the brochures. Now we're investigating whether there is any indication of a smear campaign. We will try to find out who produced and distributed the brochures. We're seeking clarification and verification from several related parties," Bawaslu commissioner Nasrullah said.

The Jakarta Panwaslu found several brochures in Matraman, East Jakarta, detailing the supposed "great figures" behind the pair. The committee has arrested four people for allegedly distributing the brochures.

"We should be careful [in the investigation] because this is a sensitive issue. We don't want to simply accuse certain parties without strong evidence because the consequences [of a false accusation] could be fatal," Nasrullah added. (trw)
