elecommunications provider PT Indosat, also known as Indosat Ooredoo, recorded a net income increase by 184.4 percent year-on-year (yoy) to Rp 1.1 trillion (US$82.45 million) in 2016.
The raise was mostly caused by more stable currency last year and the company’s shift from foreign nominated debt to rupiah nominated debt that contributed to lower interest expenses, according to a statement from the company issued on Thursday.
Meanwhile, its revenue increased by 9 percent yoy to Rp 29.2 trillion.
Its cellular business was still the main contributor of revenue with an 83 percent share, while the other revenue came from multimedia, internet, and data (MIDI) services and telecommunications services with 14 and 3 percent, respectively, the statement says.

The company’s cellular business revenue increased by 10 percent yoy to Rp 24.1 trillion due to increasing usage of data, phone, and SMS services amid a decreasing interconnection revenue. MIDI business revenue also increased by 10 percent yoy to Rp 4.09 trillion contributed by its subsidiary Lintasarta.
Meanwhile, its telecommunications revenue decreased by 14.3 percent yoy to Rp 876 billion due to lower traffic and the depreciation of Rupiah against the United States (US) dollar.
The company successfully added 16 million new cellular customers in 2016, bringing its current customer numbers to 85.7 million. However, the average revenue per user (ARPU) slightly decreased by 3.4 percent to Rp 25,200 compared to Rp 26,000 in 2015. (bbn)
