resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said his government aims to prohibit corn imports this year in an attempt to encourage farmers to increase their production.
Through the government policy Indonesia could reduce its corn imports to only 900,000 tons, down from 3.6 million tons in the previous year.
He said his government had encouraged farmers to increase their productivity, by setting the corn floor price at Rp 2,700 (20 US cents) per kilogram through a presidential instruction.
He recalled that farmers often complained about the low price of corn, between Rp 1,500 and Rp 17,000 per kilogram, because of the pressure from corn imports.
“With the instruction, farmers have been encouraged to produce more corn because it promises good profits,” said the President in a statement issued by the Presidential Office over the weekend.
The President hoped the prohibition on corn imports would further improve the welfare of the farmers and increase the country’s corn production. (bbn)
