ndonesia exited the prestigious Sudirman Cup badminton championship after failing to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in its history on Wednesday, despite beating Denmark in the second day of the sub-group stage.
Indonesia won 3-2 against Denmark in Wednesday's round, but lost 4-1 to India the previous day.
The big loss to India in Tuesday's opener sent the six-time runner-up to the bottom of Group 1D in the biennial mixed-team tournament.
Indonesia, the 1989 champion, collected a total of four winning points, while Denmark had six and India five, which secured them the quarterfinals spots.
"Yes, we won against Denmark as our shuttlers put in a laudable performance [in Wednesday's round], regardless of yesterday's result," Indonesia's team manager Susy Susanti said in a statement.
"But we failed in [collecting winning] points, and we should accept the fact that we cannot go to the quarters," she said, adding that she apologized for the failure.
Indonesia is a six-time semifinalist, and a one-time quarterfinalist in the cup.
Besides Denmark and India, Taiwan and South Korea of Group 1A, China and Thailand of Group 1B, as well as Japan and Malaysia of Group 1C have also reached the 2017 cup quarterfinals.
