Government to finish five irrigation dams in 2017

n an effort to increase agricultural production, the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry will finish the construction of five irrigation dams in 2017, an official has said.

The five dams are those in Marang Kayu in East Kalimantan, Raknamo in East Nusa Tenggara, Tanju and Mila in West Nusa Tenggara and Tugu in East Java, said the ministry's water resources director general, Imam Santoso, on Friday.

"Marang Kayu Dam is complete, while the construction of Raknamo has reached 92.6 percent completion," Imam said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Friday.

The construction of Tanju and Mila dams has reached 74.02 percent completion, while the construction of Tugu Dam has reached 71 percent completion.

There are 209 dams with total capacity of 12.62 billion cubic meters of water that can serve 761,542 hectares of agriculture fields in the country. (bbn)
