hile Ramadhan is supposed to be observed as a month of restraint for Muslims and a time for good deeds, the past two weeks of the fasting month this year have been marked with violent crimes.

More frequent violent thefts in Greater Jakarta over the past two months have prompted the police to heighten security, especially at night.

On Friday afternoon, Jakartans were shocked by a deadly robbery conducted in daylight when the victim was shot dead by assailants at a gas station in Daan Mogot, West Jakarta.

The victim, Davidson Tantono, 30, had withdrawn money from a Bank Central Asia (BCA) branch in Green Garden, West Jakarta, and as he was driving away he realized that one of the tires of his car was leaking air.

Davidson consequently pulled into the Jembatan Gantung gas station in Cengkareng at about 1:30 p.m. to have the tire checked. While a repairman was working, two unidentified people approached on a motorbike, opened the car door and took Davidson’s bag, which contained Rp 350 million (US$26,300).

Davidson ran after the men and tried to grab the bag, but one of the robbers took out a handgun and shot at the victim. The bullet entered Davidson’s right temple. The robbers fled, leaving Davidson dead on the scene.

Davidson, who ran a cooperative, had gone to the bank because one of his customers wanted to borrow money.
