Pesantren, mosques take center stage during Jokowi’s work trips

It was almost 8 p.m. and the tarawih prayer had just ended at Darussalam Islamic boarding school in Purwokerto, Central Java, last Thursday night. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, however, was nowhere to be seen. He was scheduled to join the evening Ramadhan prayer at the Islamic school, together with thousands of students and clerics, who had been waiting for him.

t was almost 8 p.m. and the tarawih prayer had just ended at Darussalam Islamic boarding school in Purwokerto, Central Java, last Thursday night.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, however, was nowhere to be seen. He was scheduled to join the evening Ramadhan prayer at the Islamic school, together with thousands of students and clerics, who had been waiting for him.

Packages of staple foods — 10 tons of rice, 2 tons of sugar and 50 kilograms of meat, worth a combined Rp 357 million — as well as Rp 100 million (US$7,519) in cash, provided by Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), was ready to be distributed to the school. But the President had yet arrived.

At exactly 8:30 p.m., local people outside the school began screaming, “Pak Jokowi! Pak Jokowi!,” as they saw the President appear in the distance, walking down a small, grassy path wearing his black sandals, brown sarong and black tuxedo.

He shook hands with people before entering the mosque at the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)-affiliated school, where he delivered a speech encouraging students and clerics to work for better relations among religious believers.
