eligious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin has urged Muslims to not celebrate the eve of Idul Fitri, known as takbiran, by lighting firecrackers on roads as it will disturb traffic and other people.

Instead, he called on Muslims to hold takbiran in mosques, or in smaller mosques known as musholas, as well as in open community spaces or backyards.

"We must keep the true meaning of takbiran and its solemnity by not celebrating it in an excessive manner," Lukman added on Friday as quoted by Kompas.com.

The eve of Idul Fitri and the day of the Muslim festivities have yet to be decided, pending a confirmation meeting, known as Isbat, set to be held by the religious affairs ministry and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) on Saturday evening that will also involve some Islamic mass organizations.

A similar call was also made by the National Police, which urged people to maintain safety during takbiran, which often involves convoys on the roads.

Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasito said motorists should follow existing traffic regulations, including using helmets.

“Safety should be a top priority,” Setyo said on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com. “Let’s ensure takbiran is safe and does not pose a danger for any participants […] like hopping on board the back of trucks. It is very dangerous to do so."

Lukman also called on all Indonesian Muslims to use this year's Idul Fitri as a moment to strengthen the unity of the nation. (yon/ipa)
