T

he house of Sujiatmi Notomihardjo, the mother of President Joko “Jokowi" Widodo, was packed with residents of Banjarsari, Surakarta, Central Java, celebrating Idul Fitri on Sunday.

Wearing a green hijab and a white, flower-patterned Muslim dress, Sujiatmi welcomed her visitors and served them traditional dishes, such as soto (soup), Javanese noodles and ice fruit cocktail deserts.

Tribunnews.com reported that dozens of people in the vicinity also thronged to the house after reciting the Idul Fitri prayer, seemingly overjoyed to meet the mother of Indonesia's most powerful man, who celebrated the Islamic holy day in Jakarta.

One of them was Sri Hartini, who could not hide her excitement at sharing the happiness of Idul Fitri with Sujiatmi, saying she was "happy to visit the mother of our president."

Families visiting the house included Jokowi's eldest son and food entrepreneur Gibran Rakabuming, who was accompanied by his wife Selvi Ananda.

Jokowi himself, along with Vice President Jusuf Kalla, opened the doors of the State Palace to the public on Sunday.

It was Jokowi’s first Idul Fitri celebration and open house at the State Palace since taking office in 2014. He spent Idul Fitri in Aceh in 2015 and in West Sumatra in 2016

Among the guests were foreign dignitaries, Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo, Financial Services Authority (OJK) chairman Muliaman Darmansyah Hadad, businessman and former trade minister Rahmat Gobel and Jakarta governor-elect Anies Baswedan. (mos/tas)
