T

he Bekasi administration in West Java will not make the measles and rubella (MR) vaccination obligatory for its residents, an official said on Tuesday.

“We won’t force parents who reject the vaccination for their children. Those who believe that the vaccine is not halal, can choose not to immunize their children,” Bekasi deputy mayor Ahmad Syaikhu said

He also added that the city would always watch the activity of the vaccine immunization, which is expected to protect Indonesian children aged 9 to 12 years old from the risks of measles and rubella, and make Indonesia free from those diseases in 2020.

Meanwhile, deputy West Java governor Deddy Mizwar insisted that the vaccine was safe.

“The vaccine is halal and safe. Do not be influenced by unclear issues. It is impossible for us to distribute vaccines that are haram [forbidden in Islamic law],” said Deddy as quoted by kompas.com. (syl)
