nited Arab Emirates (UEA)-based hypermarket chain LuLu has opened its second store in Indonesia in Serpong, Tangerang, Banten, as part of its plan to further expand its new-found retail business in the country.

The 60,960-square-meter store was inaugurated by UEA Ambassador to Indonesia Mohamed Abdulla Mohammed bin Mutleq Aghafli on Wednesday. It is set to become a major retail outlet in Jakarta’s neighboring city after the first LuLu store opened in Cakung, East Jakarta, last year.

LuLu Group spokesman V. Nandakumar said the company disbursed more than US$25 million for its latest hypermarket as part of a $500 million investment commitment in Indonesia throughout the 2016-2019 period.

“Obviously, Indonesia is a new country for us, but it [takes less time] for us to expand here [compared to other countries],” Nandakumar said, adding that LuLu had been operating in other countries such as Malaysia, India and Saudi Arabia.

The store, Nandakumar said, was one of the results of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s trip to UAE in 2015, during which he visited a LuLu hypermarket in Abu Dhabi.

With the opening of the second outlet, the company now has 127 stores worldwide.

LuLu is targeting to set up 10 stores in Indonesia by 2019. The next two outlets are expected to open in Sentul and Cikarang, West Java, before mid-2018.
