he Research and Technology and Higher Education Ministry has suspended Jakarta State University (UNJ) rector Djaali as a result of alleged plagiarism and mismanagement in the university.
“We have suspended him,” the ministry’s independent team head Ali Ghufron Mukti told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday, declining to reveal the reasons behind the suspension and saying that it was higher education minister Muhammad Nasir who had the responsibility to explain the case.
The ministry established recently the independent team to follow up on the findings by another team called the academic performance evaluation team (EKA), which was set up in 2015 by the ministry.
Earlier, Antara news agency reported that the suspension was issued after the EKA team uncovered plagiarism in UNJ.
“[The suspension is] a result of some problems there [in UNJ] which have been reviewed by the EKA team,” Muhammad said as quoted from Antara.
UNJ is among four universities to have been scrutinized by the EKA team following indications of doctoral degree scams. The team collected indications of plagiarism after analyzing five dissertations from UNJ doctoral students including Southeast Sulawesi Governor Nur Alam, who graduated summa cum laude two days before being named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in August last year.
